Helping your website to be Search Engine Friendly
Search engines play a vital part in the amount of traffic or visitors you have coming to your site. They provide you access to the world through that tiny little search box. As the internet has grown over the last decade or so, it has become more and more integrated into the average person’s life, or you could say that it has reached the masses. That is the point where things can really take off, or have an impact on people’s lives, habits, etc. Most people would not think twice if they were looking to find something specific, whether it is goods or services, by doing a search on the internet for what they are looking for. That being said, no matter what your website has to offer, the better you “rank” with the search engines, the more people will be flowing through your site. So, what can you do to help your website to become friendlier to the search engines? Here are a few simple things any webmaster can do to help improve your rankings. One of the most valuable concepts that your website must have is a “site map” that is only linked from the home page. Since the home page or index page is the first page that the search engine spider looks at, the link to the site map needs to be there, and not linked from any other page. Just a simple outline format, or tree format, or however any other format that you like to use, just make sure that all pages are included and they are simple text links. One note, however, if you have a website larger than 50 pages, keep the links on each page less than 30 so the search engine spider does not mistake your site map as a link farm, and then penalize your site for it. If more than one page is necessary, just ensure that they are all linked together so the spider can follow the links. Dont forget to create a sitemap.xml format for submiting to google, or yahoo. They bolth have a webmaster section, where you can upload your sitemap and have the spiders eat it up, and get your pages listed. Another good tip is do not over use macromedia flash, shockwave, java, etc. on your website. There is definitely a place for all this enticing content, but the search engine spiders disregard it completely. For this reason, link bars should not be created with this kind of programming UNLESS you also have a simple text link identical to the other one at the bottom of the page. That way, the search engine spiders can still follow all links on your site. These are just three simple examples of many that can improve your rankings with the Search Engines, which in turn will get you more traffic to your website, and you on your way to reaching the goals you have set for your website.
